10 reviews for Greatest Heroes and Legends of the Bible: Jonah and the Whale

Good for the kidsGreatest Heroes in an interesting series of animated programs, all include an introduction by Charlton Heston on the story we are about to see. The animation is good quality, full hand drawn 2D cel animation without shortcuts. In the middle of each episode in this series, they usually have a cutaway of another story from the bible, done in computer animation to contrast the two stories. The story of Jonah is a good pick to animate, due to the large fish or whale that swallows him, as that is what kids remember of the story and it is a good way to get them to view it.This is not my favorite depiction of Jonah, as I prefer the “Testament: Bible in Animation” version of Jonah. Having said that we did enjoy this, especially the kids. All versions stray from the source material and are not accurate, as they balance what will make a story flow for the viewer, especially kids. In this “Greatest Heroes” version, Jonah is very young, perhaps to relate to kids more. What we do get here that many versions do not explain well enough, is why Jonah despised Ninevah so much… They were attacking his people all the time. Overall it is geared toward the younger crowd, great moral lessons here, and if you have issues about the changes from scripture, always discuss the differences afterwords to your kids as we did. No extras on the DVD, sound and picture quality were good, no problems with playing the disc or the menu. I recommend buying this DVD.

Great valueYou can’t go wrong with this when the price is so low. The animation quality is like that typically seen in basic Saturday morning cartoons, which is good enough for kids. What I like is that all the videos in this series give all the important details of the story, rather than giving a shallow, watered-down version as is usually the case in children’s stories. These will entertain preschoolers up through junior high and the script is very closely based on the scriptural account. The only reason I didn’t give this series a 5 is that each video has a hokey song that could definitely have been left out, but for such a low price and good script, I can overlook that.

Children’s Bible Stories DVDSThese children’s Bible Stories are very well done. The only problem I have with them is they are close to an hour long and my classes are about an hour long, so it leaves little time for discussion, etc. Other than that, I would recommend them to anyone working with children.

Purchased for Sunday School.Purchased for summer Sunday School. We decided to have a drive-in movie theater for our Sunday School program during the summer months. I purchased this series of videos to show. They are awesome. The kids love them. The kids attending the class are ages K-5.

ExcellentI ordered severeal of these to show to my kids. As we read each story I wanted to show them the movie behind it. The kids enjoyed these very much and at a inexpensive cost, it is definitely worth it. It’s very engaging and can allow for much interaction with the kids.

Nice video – if you fast forward through the fish’s belly scenesThis had the potential to be a great children’s video. Unfortunately, they introduced a lot of non-Biblical stuff in the whale’s belly – a ghost and talking snakes. I have to stop the video and fast forward through this part as it is not appropriate for a toddler and is not in the Bible. With the exception of the whale’s belly scene – the video is very good. The graphics are nice and my niece loves it.Personally, I liked Charlton Heston’s introduction, but it was a bit long for a 3-year old.
